Web 2.0 in schools – a tough nut to crack?
According to a recent article from the BBC, the general secretary of NASUWT believes that social networking websites ‘served no useful purpose and should be closed’ as they are a breeding ground for bullying. From an educational point of view, most readers on here are probably more inclined to agree with Beatbullying chief executive Emma Jane Cross who thinks society should take the blame, not the technology and that the Internet can, in fact, provide refuge and an outlet for some of the least confident of students. Interesting to read both the positive and negative views regarding this topic and where opinions supporting and criticising it are coming from. It would certainly be a shame to deprive pupils of software applications that seem to capture their imagination on so many levels with much to be gained from harnessing this in the classroom. With the right instruction and level of control, far from being a threat, Web 2.0 - including social networking - will be very powerful.
